Applied to 1,000 Jobs. Still No Response?

You Applied to 1,000 Jobs.

Still No Response. It’s Not Just You.

Every day, jobseekers share a now-familiar story:

“I’ve applied to hundreds of roles. I know I’m qualified. But all I get are rejection emails, or worse, silence.”

You’ve probably spent hours fine-tuning your resume. Maybe even paid someone to rewrite it - once, twice, or more. You’ve tweaked your LinkedIn headline, taken online courses, updated your cover letters… and still, nothing.

It’s not just frustrating. It’s expensive. It’s emotionally exhausting. And it leaves you asking the same questions over and over:

What else am I supposed to do? Why am I not getting any calls?

Here’s the truth: it’s not just you. And no, your resume isn’t the problem.

What’s Really Going On

Since COVID, hiring has changed dramatically and not always for the better.
Here’s what’s driving the disconnect:

1. Lean HR Teams = Less Human Review

Many companies cut back their HR teams during the pandemic and never fully rebuilt them. That means a single recruiter might be screening hundreds or even thousands of resumes in a week.

To manage the volume, companies rely heavily on automation, applicant tracking systems (ATS), and AI filters. These tools can help with efficiency but they often come at the cost of accuracy and fairness.

2. AI Isn’t Always Smart—or Fair

Most ATS software is designed to look for keyword matches, not transferable skills or potential. So even if you’re a strong candidate, if your resume doesn’t mirror the job description exactly, it might never be seen by a real person.

Worse, these tools are often trained on biased historical data. That means nontraditional candidates career changers, veterans, parents returning to work can be filtered out automatically.

3. Job Descriptions Are Often a Mess

Let’s be honest: many job postings are outdated, unrealistic, or copied from other roles. You might be tailoring your resume to a description that doesn’t even reflect what the team actually needs.

The result? Confusion, frustration, and highly capable people slipping through the cracks.

What You Can Do (That Isn’t Just “Revamp Your Resume”)

You’ve probably read a hundred tips about formatting your resume or optimizing your LinkedIn. And while those things matter, they’re not the game-changer.

The real needle-mover? Networking.
This is where you get the most bang for your buck.

Conversations > Applications. Every time.

When you build relationships, doors open that would’ve stayed shut if you relied solely on online portals. A warm introduction bypasses the algorithm. A 15-minute chat with someone on the inside is worth more than 50 cold applications.

Build a Real Networking Strategy

Don’t just “try to network”—treat it like part of your job search strategy.

Here’s how to do it right:

  • Track your outreach. Use a spreadsheet or calendar to log who you’ve reached out to, when you followed up, and what you discussed. Consistent follow-up is key.
  • Show up. Join free networking events, virtual meetups, and industry panels. Many professional associations have free or low-cost meetings—get in the room and introduce yourself.
  • Leverage social media.  The other day, I saw someone post online about their job search struggles. What they may not have realized is that it was also a smart move.
Don’t be afraid to tell people you’re looking.
Don’t be afraid to say what kind of role you want.

Your network can’t help if they don’t know. A simple post can lead to referrals, conversations, or even job offers. Let your community amplify your search.

To the Hiring World: We Need to Do Better

If you’re on the employer side of the table, this is a wake-up call.

Qualified, talented people are being lost in the noise not because they’re unprepared, but because the system is broken.

It’s time to rethink how we use automation. Time to challenge outdated job descriptions. Time to rebuild the human side of hiring.

To the Jobseekers: You’re Not Alone

You’re not just a resume. You’re not a keyword match. You’re a person with skills, experience, and goals that deserve attention.

If the system hasn’t recognized that yet, it’s the system that needs fixing.. not you.

Keep going!

The right opportunity and the right team will see your value.
